Music Magazine Evaluation

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

Audience Feedback

This is my audience feedback for my magazine. I needed to gain feedback from my target audience so I decided to video two of my friends, Rina Peshwaria and Geenal Dalal to give their view on what they thought about my magazine. After that I asked them if I could put their video up on to youtube so that I could upload it onto my my blog, as I needed their approval to do so. As well as this I went around asking a few other people what they thought about my magazine to see what I needed to improve on. Most people said that I needed to add more pictures on my double page spread and apart from that it was eye catching and colourful.

My Magazine - Front Cover

The image above shows the front cover of my magazine. I used Photoshop and InDesign to create my music magazine and I believe that these softwares are good to use when creating a magazine. The title of my magazine is 'PULSE' and the main colours that I used for this is black and red as they looked good togehter and these colours associate well with the genre of rock. The font I used for my title was comic sans as this would relate to my target audience as it was simple and easy to read. Behind my title I decided to create a red pulse line as it looked good with the title. I decided to put a barcode in my magazine along with the date and price as this would make my magazine look more proffesional.

My Magazine - Contents Page

Like my front cover, I used Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to create my contents page which is shown above. As I went to a few concerts, I decided to add some pictures from the gigs that I went to. The picture at the top is of a band called Bullet For My Valentine. The colour of this image is blue, so I decided to use blue as my main colour as it would blend in well with the picture. Another picture that I used is taken of Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. By adding images to my contents page, it would attract the reader more and make them want to read more of the magazine. I tried to make my contents page as simple as possible by adding sub headings, making it easier for the reader to get to what page they want.

My Magazine - Double Page Spread

My final task was to create a double page spread which I also created in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. I decided to place my model on the left taking up the whole page, as this will be one of the first things my audience is going to see when they turn the page along with the title. I decided to use a catchy quote as my title because this would grab the readers attention and get them to read the article. To make my title stand out I made some of te words bold, with different sizes and slightly rotate the lines either to the left or to the right. I also made the guitar go into the article which is another reason the magazine could grab the readers attention.

I have used several conventions such as a header and footer, along with the page number. I have also added a caption for my picture. Thus making it look like a proffesional magazine. The colours that I have used are mainly black as this colour relates to my target audience. As well as this, it is an easy colour to read and has a simple look to it. By having a simple magazine, the reader does not have to wonder their eyes all aroud the place and by adding a big image and eye catching title, they are still able to get drawn to the magazine.

Double Page Spread Research

Looking at several different double page spreads, I found two which caught my attention. One from the Q magazine and one from Kerrang.  Both these double page spreads had quotes as their headlines and I found this rather interesting and I decided to do the same for my magazine.
Q Magazine

This double page spread is from the Q magazine. It is quite different to other double page spreads and this is shown via the large headline which is a pull quote. The image is also very large so at a quick glance the audience can tell that this article is about Lilly Allen. This appeals to its target audience through the use of what she is wearing and her rebellious make up which also represents her attitude. Also she is wearing red and this colour stands out from the rest of the article suggesting that she is asking for the attention as that colour is bright and stands out. As well as this, the title big and bold making it eye catching and would make the audience want to read more. Lilly Allen fills the whole page and therefore this suggests that in this article is all about her giving her a sense of power. This photo obviously shows that she is seeking for attention, whereas the title says she is just being honest. This makes the double page spread stand out and makes the audience want to read more.

Kerrang Magazine

From looking at this double page spread, the magazine has a colour scheme of mainly black, white and grey and these colours go well with each other. The double page spread is simple and not all over the place. Making it easier to look at and read. The headline is in black and the words 'ALCHOHOL', 'DRUGS' and 'DODGY WOMEN' are bold making these words stand out from the rest of the title, thus making the audience want to read more and want to know what the article is about. As well as this it is also a pull quote from the article. This is something that I have decided to use for my magazine as it is an interesting idea that may grab the readers attention. The pages are split up with the members of the band taking up the whole page on the right hand side with the article on the left. The title is spread across both pages and stands out very effectively with the use of bold writing in certain words creating some sort of meaning in these words and this suggests what the article is going to be about. The picture on the right shows the band Metallica looking straight at the audience. This is maybe a way of grabbing their attention as they want the audience to read about them. They are all wearing black and this fits in well with the colour scheme. The questions within the article are highlighted in white. This illuminates it to make it easier for the reader to see and not get it confused with the answers. The font used is mainly black as it is clear and easy to read and it works well with the grey background. I have decided to lay my magazine double page spread out similarly to the one in this magazine as it is laid out in a different way to other magazines and the layout would relate to my target audience as they prefer larger images with less text.

Flat Plan

The illustrations below show my flat plan. If I were to create a professional magazine, a flat plan would be vital in order to help me create a well laid out magazine with a certain amount of advertisements suitable for the target audience. Throughout my magazine, I have several advertisements, this is due to the fact that it reduces reduction costs and therefore this will allow me to keep my magazine price at £2.99. So that it is value for money. The target audience for my magazine is for people aged 15 - 25 therefore I used a variety of different adverts that would relate to them. This would mainly consist of perfume, clothing, headphones etc. As well as this, my target audience do not enjoy reading huge amounts of texts so I have decided to add more pictures to my magazine with less text. Companies will pay quite a lot of money to have their adverts in the magazine. Thus from this, the money made from the advertisements can pay off production costs and will therefore let me keep my magazine at a price that is suitable for all.
